72 Hours: The Morning After Pill (MAP) or Plan B

This is a kind of Emergency Contraceptive that is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.  It is a two dose pill alternative that contains a high dose of the hormone progestin. It works one of three ways:

  1. If the egg has not been released, the pill prevents ovulation from beginning which inhibits the egg and sperm from meeting, avoiding fertilization.
  2. If Ovulation has already occurred, the pill will affect the fallopian tubes (where fertilization occurs) to prevent the egg and sperm from meeting.
  3. If the fertilization has already occurred, the uterus lining will become unsuitable for the egg to implant, and therefore it will induce a miscarriage.
