72 Hours: The Morning After Pill (MAP) or Plan B
This is a kind of Emergency Contraceptive that is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It is a two dose pill alternative that contains a high dose of the hormone progestin. It works one of three ways:
- If the egg has not been released, the pill prevents ovulation from beginning which inhibits the egg and sperm from meeting, avoiding fertilization.
- If Ovulation has already occurred, the pill will affect the fallopian tubes (where fertilization occurs) to prevent the egg and sperm from meeting.
- If the fertilization has already occurred, the uterus lining will become unsuitable for the egg to implant, and therefore it will induce a miscarriage.
